Working with Nude Models

Are you an amateur photographer intrigued by the idea of shooting with a nude model? Perhaps you’re experienced but haven’t ventured into this type of photography yet, or maybe you’ve had some uncomfortable experiences. No matter why you’re here, I’ve written this to address the confusion and awkwardness that often arise when working with nude models. Let’s change that by understanding some basics together.

First and foremost, remember that nude models are people too. They come in all shapes, personalities, and comfort levels with their bodies. Just because someone poses nude doesn’t mean they’re involved in porn or constantly walk around naked.

Keep in mind that while most models are comfortable posing nude, they have different boundaries regarding poses, what they want to showcase, and where their photos are shared. Always respect their boundaries!

Never ever touch your model. As a photographer, it is essential to always prioritize the comfort and respect of your model. They are in a vulnerable position when posing nude, and it’s crucial to be mindful of that power dynamic. Even if you ask for consent, it’s important to recognize that the model might feel pressured to give it. Instead of taking matters into your own hands, kindly request the model to fix any stray hairs or spots.

If you want to shoot nudes, discuss it with the model beforehand. Springing it on them will lead to uncomfortable situations, and making your model uncomfortable will lead to bad images.

Pro tip: Involve your model in the planning of your shoot. They are most often creative souls and will when asked, good input to the shoot.

Remember that nobody is perfect, physically speaking. We all have scars and imperfections. While it’s okay to avoid certain angles or features, there’s no need to point them out unnecessarily. Instead, adjust your angle or ask the model to turn. Critiquing flaws can damage a model’s self-esteem.

Avoid making inappropriate comments, which can make you appear creepy, even if you don’t mean it that way. Keep the atmosphere professional and respectful.

Use appropriate terminology when discussing intimate anatomy. “Breasts” is generally preferred over slang terms like “boobs” or “tits.” Similarly, use words like “butt,” “bum,” or “rear” instead of “ass.” When it comes to genitals, it’s best to ask what term the model prefers. In general, start with neutral terms like “the area between your legs” to avoid offence.

Understanding that there are various styles of nudes is essential. Shooting art nudes doesn’t mean the model wants to participate in glamour or erotic photography. Some models prefer to exclude certain body parts from the images.

Pro tip: Look at the models portfolio to understand their preferred levels. Ask for comfort levels. Communicate your vision before the shoot.

Pro tip: Use moodboards when communicating your vision for the shoot. It’s a very good way to align you and the model on the outcome of the shoot.

Remember, when shooting a naked model, they may get cold easily, and privacy can be a concern. If shooting outdoors, inform the model about the location and potential issues, such as people unexpectedly seeing the shoot or local laws.

Pro tip: Bring a warm coat or blanket for the model. It’s a good way to keep the model warm and to help cover up if you get unexpected visitors. Comfortable models will give you better images.

Bonus pro tip: Cold models turn blue, and you don’t want the extra work in Photoshop.

Working with nude models opens up incredible possibilities for artistic expression and capturing exquisite details. When approached with mutual respect, it allows us to showcase the beautiful shapes, lines, and curves that can be obscured by clothing. Whether we’re aiming for alluring, erotic, artistic, abstract, or a unique combination.

Let’s embrace the beauty of the naked body, and approach our most important creative partner, the models, with the utmost respect and professionalism.

Good luck, fellow photographers!
